Any serious carpenter, mechanic or hardworking tradesman will see the value in owning a wooden tool chest. The storage of the tools of the trade should be extremely high in the list of priorities for any worker and a well made tool chest is going to protect the tools from external factors such as the weather as well as the chance of damage through bumps and knocks.

When treated properly the properties of wood provide outstanding protection and will also be durable for the longer term. The type of wood that best suits a tool chest is hardwood such as oak, cherry or maple and when given a stain and lacquered finish is particularly hard wearing while looking good doing so.

There are a few factors to consider when buying a wooden tool chest such as the dimensions of the box, the amount of storage space needed for smaller objects and the price that you are prepared to pay. Some wooden tool chests will be particularly inexpensive but may not last as long as others. A well designed tool chest will provide a number of drawers to store small items such as nuts, bolts, drill bits and nails. It should also be large enough to store miscellaneous items that are used regularly on site.

The alternative to buying a ready-made tool chest in which you are beholden to the dimensions chosen by the manufacturer is to make one yourself. Many carpenters and other handymen may prefer this option because you will be able to design the type of features that are specific to your needs. In this case the challenge will be to create a tool chest that is sturdy enough to withstand daily use and abuse.

The tool chest is more than a simple storage container for a bunch of tools. It is something to be proud of and can make a great first impression on customers as a great indicator of professionalism and pride in one’s work.
