When I was a kid, I had a rocking horse. Two of them, in fact. And between my friend and I, these two rocking horses sparked no end of creativity. We could be great Renaissance ladies, riding side-saddle. We could be thieves, speeding our getaway. We could be cowboys or Indians, or princesses or adventuring heroines. It’s always the simple toys that provide for the most entertainment. They provide the best spark for the imagination. As far as I know, during my childhood, the rocking horse was the only one of its breed. Imagine my surprise to learn that now, there are all kinds of rocking animals. I know this through my children who, having discovered the existence of other rocking animals, have started a collection, a veritable rocking menagerie. It began when my little boy discovered that one of his friends had a rocking zebra.
Michael had previously avoided playing with his sister’s rocking horse—my little man couldn’t bring himself to ride anything with a pretty pink ribbon in its mane. When he discovered the zebra, however, he fell in love—here was an appropriately masculine mount. Of course, he had to have one. Now my daughter’s rocking horse and my son’s rocking zebra stood side-by-side. It was my daughter who discovered the novel and exotic rocking cheetah. It was soft and plush, and even made fairly life-like jungle sounds. Now the imaginative dramas really took off—between the zebra and the cheetah, their two jungle rocking animals, my kids could be on an exotic African safari.

They could be living in the jungle, raised by wild animals. When my youngest son learned how to walk, we just had to get him his own rocking animal. As we considered what to get him, we remembered that he had always adored our neighbor’s dog. Every time the dog would come around, his face would light up and he would point and laugh and extend his hand towards the dog’s fuzzy ears. We were thrilled when we found him the perfect plush rocking dog. Of everything we got him for Christmas that year, the dog was easily his favorite toy. Now my three kids could ride rocking animals all together, riding off to fantastic adventures in the corner of their playroom. Then my daughter, Wendy, got her jungle-themed bedroom. (We re-decorated it for her; even as a kid she was captivated by anything having to do with the jungle. She must have watched The Jungle Book three times a day.)
Of course, we put the rocking cheetah in there. Michael wouldn’t let her keep the zebra in there, of course, though he would take it in sometimes so they could play together. This presented a problem, though—the poor cheetah was all alone. Wendy was sensitive to this, and just had to get the cheetah some friends. The result: over the course of a year she acquired a rocking elephant, a rocking tiger, a rocking lion, and a rocking giraffe. Her room was something of a rocking zoo. She was delighted—now she could play a jungle queen, one who could talk to all the jungle animals, and they would even let her ride them.
Not to be outdone, Michael added a rocking bear (another appropriately masculine animal) to his collection. After a time, he even found a rocking frog and a rocking snail (who would have imagined that you would be able to find these things?) These he shared with his brother, who loved to climb from the back of one onto the back of another, despite the number of times he fell in the attempt. People ask me what I’m going to do with all these rocking animals, once my kids outgrow them. Honestly, I think I’ll keep them. I’ll store them in the toy room, and let them wait for my grandkids—a new generation to take them on marvelous adventures.
